Part 1.1 is the first task of Multilevel Speaking, and it tests level A2. You are asked three questions about yourself: your studies or work, your free time, where you live. You answer each in about 30 seconds.

Why this part matters

The questions are easy, but 30 seconds goes very fast. Many candidates say one sentence and stop, leaving half the time empty, while others lose time on long introductions. It is the first task, so a good start also gives you confidence for the parts that follow.

The 30-second formula

  1. A direct answer (1 sentence): answer the question straight away.
  2. A reason or detail (1-2 sentences): "because...", "especially...".
  3. An example or extra point (1 sentence): "For example, last weekend...", "Recently I've also started...".

That is roughly 60-75 words, which fits 30 seconds at a normal pace.

Model answers

Where do you live?

I live in Chilanzar, one of the biggest districts in Tashkent. It's quite a busy area, with lots of shops and a big bazaar, but our street is surprisingly quiet. The best thing about it is the metro station, just five minutes from my house.

What do you do in your free time?

Mostly I play football with friends, usually twice a week in the evenings. It's the easiest way for me to switch off after studying. Recently I've also started watching English series without subtitles, which is harder than it sounds.

Do you prefer to study in the morning or in the evening?

In the evening, definitely. In the morning I'm too sleepy to concentrate, but after dinner my head is clear and the house is quieter. For example, I usually do my English practice between nine and eleven at night.

Common mistakes

  • Repeating the question. "I live in Tashkent. I live in Tashkent because..." eats precious seconds.
  • A memorised script. A prepared text never quite fits the question, and it shows at once.
  • A one-sentence answer. "Yes, I like it." is too little even for A2: add a reason.
  • Being cut off mid-sentence. Recording stops when time is up, so keep your last sentence short.

How to practise

  • Set a 30-second timer on your phone and record your answer.
  • Check every answer against the formula: answer, reason, example.
  • The questions on our IELTS Part 1 topic pages work for this part too: daily routine, hometown, hobbies.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are there in part 1.1?

Preparation materials describe three personal questions, about 30 seconds each. The exact time is shown on screen in the exam.

Can I memorise my answers in advance?

Preparing words and phrases by topic helps, but memorising whole answers backfires: if the question is slightly different, your answer will not fit.
