Vocabulary carries a lot on clothes questions: words for style, colour and material. Even if fashion does not interest you, you can answer well as long as you give the reason. If you are asked about traditional dress, explain it in English.

What the examiner asks on this topic

What kind of clothes do you usually wear?

Do you wear different clothes on weekdays and at weekends?

Is fashion important to you?

Where do you usually buy your clothes?

Have you ever worn traditional clothes?

Do you prefer comfortable or stylish clothes?

Model answers (aimed at band 7+)

What kind of clothes do you usually wear?

Pretty casual things, to be honest: jeans, plain T-shirts and trainers. I like neutral colours like grey and navy because they go with everything, so I don't have to think too hard in the morning.

Is fashion important to you?

Not especially. I like to look neat, but I don't follow trends. A lot of fashion seems to change every few months just so that people buy more, and I'd rather have a few good things that last for years.

Where do you usually buy your clothes?

Mostly online now, because it's cheaper and things arrive within a day or two. The only problem is sizes, so for shoes I still go to a proper shop and try them on.

Have you ever worn traditional clothes?

Yes, at weddings and on Navruz. I have a chapan, a long embroidered robe, that my grandfather gave me. It's not something I'd wear every day, but I feel quite proud when I put it on.

  • Explain traditional dress: "a chapan, a long embroidered robe", "a doppi, an embroidered skullcap".
  • Give preferences with "I'd rather..." and a reason.
  • If fashion does not interest you, argue that as an opinion too.
